What's New in BSA Training?

Below are the steps that now make up the training process, or training continuum, for leaders in the Indian Waters Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The table below will tell you what you need to have in order to qualify as a Trained Leader.

Fast Start
This training, which introduces new volunteers to Scouting, will continue for all leaders. Online or video for Cub Leaders, video for all other leaders. Ask your Unit or the Scout Shop for a copy of the tape.

Basic Leader Training This replaces previous basic training for Cub Scouters, Boy Scouters, and Venturing leaders and is comprised of several parts:

  • New Leader Essentials is a training session for all leaders in all levels of Scouting. It covers the overall mission, vision, values, methods, and age appropriateness of the programs of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Leader Specific Training consists of separate courses for your program specific area:
    • Cub Leader Specific Training : Workshops for Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, and Pack Committee members
    • Scout Leader Specific Training : Required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. Part 2 of 3
    • Troop Committee Challenge : For troop committee members.
    • Venture/Varsity Leader Specific : Varsity Coaches, Venture Advisors
    • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills : New outdoor skills training required for Scoutmasters and assistants. (Part 3 of 3) It is also appropriate for Webelos Scout leaders, Varsity Coaches, and Venturing Advisors.

Supplemental Training This is continuous learning designed for the different BSA programs.
Examples are:
  • Youth Protection Training for All Programs
  • Cub and Boy Scout Roundtables
  • University of Scouting
  • BALOO Training for a Pack
  • Venturing Powder Horn
Advanced Training: Wood Badge 21st Century . This is now one course for all leaders. To attend, leaders must be trained according to the standards of their specific Scouting positions. You must be trained in your current leadership position to be eligible for this training.
